How can a parent know when he/she is being too harsh on their child/teen?

If experience is your answer, than please be more specific,How can a parent know when he/she is being too harsh on their child/teen?
You know you have been too harsh when Child Protective Services takes custody of your children and you are sitting in jail charged with child abuse and/or neglect. Otherwise, you are probably not being strict enough. Take care. How can a parent know when he/she is being too harsh on their child/teen?
There are many ways to be harsh to a child, taking away there ipod because they did not clean there room is not harsh, it is right. Disciplining a child is something that must be done, if you believe you are being to hard on him/her because the child is complaining or calling you names because ';it's so unfair that you're doing this';... SUCK IT UP!!! they most like deserve this disciplinary action. Complaining deserves more punishment. But in any case of physical discipline is illegal and way to far.
When you walk out the room and think about what just happened and you realize you could have been wrong. Then you have to go and eat a bit of crow and apologize.
when they insult you or rol their eyes.
