Can step-parent cover step kids under their med insurance?

I live in MN. I am able to cover my husbands son (my step son) under our insurance at work which is Medica. He is unable to do so with his insurance which is Health Partners and his Dental plan as well (for my children). His employer told him he would have to adopt them in order to be insured. Is this correct? Do employers/insurance companies have the final say in what they allow? Is it up to the discretion and contract of the employer and insurance company? Having a hard time finding info on this. Can step-parent cover step kids under their med insurance?
Since the employer is providing the health insurance, they set the rules for eligibility. Yes, they may require that he adopt the children. Most often it depends on who has custody, but they may require adoption. You should ask the employer to provide you (in writing) the rules for eligibility-just for you own peace of mind. The carrier should also be able to provide you with this info. Can step-parent cover step kids under their med insurance?
I agree with the first person who answered your question. They are the best to inform you on this one. If it provides you any hope, my step father provided medical insurance for all three of us (we arent his kids) up until I was 22 and had to get medical on my own. It nevers hurts to ask. You can also call the insurance hotline for general info.
Sorry, I am not a health expert.

However, if he has a Human Resources Department maybe he would find the answer there. It is possible that you have to adopt children to get medical insurance for them.

You might call your Dept. of Labor or Labor Board in your state to find out the laws in your state.
Yes, it's different employer to employer and company to company. They can choose to cover domestic partners or not and they can choose how the coverage for the step-children works as well.
The answer could vary by person. It is alway a good idea to hear the suggestion from different sides and try to choose the best one. Here http://www.HealthInsuranceIdeas.info/free-online-health-insurance.htm is a good one i recommend.
