What does a parent want to hear from his kid when he's explaining a bad grade?

Excuses or solutions?What does a parent want to hear from his kid when he's explaining a bad grade?
that he needs help and wants to try harder. maybe you need to make sure he is getting the homework done during the week %26amp; help study for tests when they have one. When he brings home a paper with a grade lower than a C make corrections then then turn in again to have teacher look at.What does a parent want to hear from his kid when he's explaining a bad grade?
The truth.Maybe he h is having a hard time with the subject.That does not ALWAYS mean laziness on his/her part,so you need to SHUT up and LISTEN to what they say before you have a conniption fit.Could be they are having a hard time understanding the subject, or they have a sorry teacher(I had more of those than good ones), could be they are distracted by the opposite gender,LISTEN before you jump to conclusions.Remember, your kids are only human.
that he cares and wants to fix it and WILL fix it.

Edit: and i dont know why i got a thumbs-down but i am a mother and i better see that you are going to try harder, and come up with some solutions, no excuses. !
First, I would like the kid to admit that it was their fault. That they chose not to do the assignment and that they earned that bad grade.

I would like an apology and a promise to improve in the future.
Solutions... excuses don't fix anything. A request for help would be a good start.
Somthing along the lines of ';I'll try very hard to get a better grade next time.';
solutions
Something along the lines of

I tried as hard as I could and intend to do A, B, and C to bring it up next quarter.
the truth
an indication that he cares and wants to fix it.
