How should I handle an absent parent?

How should I, as a teacher solve the problem of an absent parent...one that does not participate in their child's education? How should I handle an absent parent?
involve the parent...schedule conferences with him/her. talk about the importance of being involved-that parents are the children's primary teacher. have a behavior system in place that the parent can carry over and do at home-offer the parent the resources to do this of course. come up with a list of volunteer opportunities for all parents-a checklist of sorts-get them to check their interests and return-once you get this back, you can then tell this parent ';i see you are interested in helping with ... let's schedule a time to do this.'; praise the parent when he/she does do something-sometimes adults need praise too. send home a daily folder and ask the parent to initial each day. send home articles to all parents (so you are not just singling one out) about the importance of parents in their childs education.

sometimes it can be tough to get parents involved. **sigh...if they only knew** however, dont give up. at the end of the year, you will know you have done all you can do. chin up and good luck! How should I handle an absent parent?
Unfortunately teachers can not solve all problems, nor should they. Stay positive with the parent so that a relationship is formed that may allow you to introduce some ideas in a non-threatening way. In the meantime, be the best teacher that you can be so it helps make up for what may be lacking out of school.
As a teacher I don't believe there is a lot you can do about an 'absent parent' per say. As far as the child goes, you can only do your best to pass on/teach skills that will enable for that child to become a fully functioning member of society
How do you measure a parent's participation in their child's education?

Sometimes that is visible and sometimes it is not visible to others.
i think the best thing to do is to invite the parent to a private meeting and discuss the issues that needs to be resolved
