What age can't a parent hit their child anymore by law?

I live in the uk, dont know how much difference that makes.

A parent hitting a child over 16 doesn't seam right to me it just looks like assault. Anyone know what age they cant anymore? What age can't a parent hit their child anymore by law?
Not suppose to hit a child anytime. What age can't a parent hit their child anymore by law?
The law is different in different countries and even within different parts of the UK.

Physically chastising a child is legally controlled strictly in Scotland, but not in England and Wales. It is, however, illegal in England and Wales to physically chastise a child to such an extent as to leave a bruise, mark, cut or any other injury, or to use any object, whatever it may be (cane, belt etc) to ';chastise'; a child in Scotland (but this is not covered in England and Wales).

If you end up charged with assault of a child, ';reasonable chastisement'; used to be an accepted defence in court, but not if it causes injuries mentioned above (Children Act 2004 S58 - punishment must be ';reasonable';, but no definition of reasonable is given.)

R v Hopley (1860) established a limited protection to children - chastisement must be ';moderate and reasonable';, something it cannot be if punishment is administered to gratify passion or rage, is immoderate or excessive, is protracted beyond a child's powers of endurance, or performed with an instrument ';unfit for the purpose'; or calculated to produce danger to life or limb.

Scotland has been clearer on physical punishments since 2003, specifically outlawing using implements, blows to the head or face, and shaking.

But the simple answer is that at 18 you have the full legal rights and personality of an adult, and all the protections the law offers to adults but denies to children, including protection from assault, even if that assault is performed by a parent.
I think the law is rather vague but they cannot hit a child at any age if it leaves a mark. If parents have been effective in bringing up their children, there would be no need to even smack them after the age of about five. I only ever gave my children a smack a couple of times when they were really out of hand.
If its your own kid, once they cheek you back they're old enough to smack. All kids go ';no'; ';wont'; you will ';wont '; oh yes you will, c'mere smack! whahahaha. Whats the cut off age? that would be when they stop cheeking you, 17-25.
I know, and they might hit you back quite hard.
They can't at all as it is assault.
